Surf N’ Wear Beach House

Began as Owl Surf Shop in Summerland in 1962, became Surf n’ Wear in 1965; the Beach House since 1987.

Santa Barbara · Est. 1962

The story

The story starts in 1961, when Jeff White and Brian Bradley opened the Owl Surf Shop on Lillie Avenue in Summerland, next door to the Yater Surf Shop. Brian shaped the boards and Jeff glassed them; the name came from White Owl cigars, and some early boards had the cigar-box owl glassed onto the deck.

The shop became Surf n’ Wear in 1965 and has been the Beach House in Santa Barbara since 1987. It is the sole licensee of Renny Yater’s Yater Surfboards, one of Santa Barbara’s most famous labels.

Today it sits at 10 State Street near Stearns Wharf, with its own Santa Barbara Surf Shop and Beach House clothing lines alongside the big surf brands, staffed by surfers who know the Rincon-to-Leadbetter coastline.
