SunSong is the latest film from Spearhead Unlimited, the creative platform Mikey February founded, and after a run of premieres across the US it’s now free to watch online. Mikey produced it, Sam Smith directed and edited it, and Wade Carroll, Dave Fox and Ian Thurtell filmed it at Cloudbreak and around Fiji’s islands, with support from Sun Bum.
The film was inspired by 17-year-old Fijian surfer James Kusitino, part of the first generation of local Fijians making an impact on the world stage. He’s joined by Mikey, Tosh Tudor, Kobe Hughes, Frankie Harrer and Lungi Slabb. The soundtrack pairs South African legends Hugh Masekela and Letta Mbulu and American saxophonist Azar Lawrence with field recordings from Mikey’s travels, linking Fiji and Africa through shared rhythms. Surfer’s review wonders out loud whether it’s the best surf film of the year.
